Here is a contradiction of terms to consider – job security. The very phrase is a misnomer, a mutually exclusive play on words. If you have one, you cannot have the other. It’s as simple as that.
During the last week in April of 2009, more than 600,000 people filed unemployment claims in their state unemployment offices. The good news about that number is that it represents a reduction from prior weeks. But the implication is sobering – 600,000 people per week is almost 3,000,000 people per month who are losing their jobs. For the most part, these people probably all felt as recently as a year ago that their jobs were secure. The unfortunate reality however is this – if you work for company, or for another person, your job is not secure. The only true form of employment security is self-employment.
Let’s face it, people care primarily about themselves. Even if you like your boss – which many people obviously don’t – his or her concern when it comes down to it is about personal job survival. So if the company issues a mandate for workforce reduction, and the boss has the option of resigning his or her position, or firing you. Guess who gets the pink slip?
Most entrepreneurs consider themselves to be unemployable because they are not willing to accept these conditions. They are not willing to stake their future on a company who treats them like a number, or upon a boss whose interests are primarily self-serving. Entrepreneurs realize that they and they alone are responsible for their own financial future, and they prefer it that way. They don’t worry about taking their lives back, because they’ve never given their lives away. Most entrepreneurs would prefer to struggle through the early stages of a business over which they have total control, rather than settle for the “security” of a job. But this is an important point so let’s go back to it – if you have a job, you have no security.
Even in the best of times but particularly during a recession such as this, even if you are still working, you are at risk. The best thing you can do for your future and your family’s future as well is to face up to the fact that you will be much better off working for yourself. Fire your boss, and launch your own business where you control the shots, and you alone are responsible for your own security.
